Job Opportunities at Texas State University The Department of Anthropology at Texas State University invites applications for an experienced and outstanding senior scholar to serve as Department Chair beginning Spring 2026. Appointments will be at the Advanced Associate or Professor rank with tenure. The Chair will report to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and will serve as the department’s academic and administrative leader. The Chair is a member of the college leadership team working collaboratively with the dean, university administration, fellow department chairs and school directors, center directors, faculty members, and staff to support and advance the strategic goals of the University, college and department. We seek applications from broadly trained anthropologists from any subfield of Anthropology whose teaching and research interests build upon and complement that of the department. The successful candidate will have demonstrated higher education leadership experience that prepares them to serve as department chair, guiding the department’s academic programs, and advancing its mission. They will also contribute to the department’s baccalaureate degrees in Anthropology, M.A. in Anthropology, and Ph.D. in Applied Anthropology. The Department of Anthropology has 23 full-time faculty working in archaeology, cultural anthropology, biological anthropology, and linguistics. The department includes two major centers: the Center for Archaeological Studies ( CAS ) and the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State ( FACTS ), which the Chair oversees. The department also has several labs and projects that support sustained and innovative research by faculty and students. Required Qualifications Ph.D. in Anthropology or related field Advanced Associate Professor or Professor with tenure at the time of appointment. Demonstrated excellence in scholarship/creative activity. Experience teaching and mentoring students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Demonstrated record of effective academic leadership that may include development or growth of academic programs; strategic planning; development of new facilities, funding, endowments, and partnerships; prior administrative experience as chair or center director; or leadership in national organizations, societies, or nonprofits. Preferred Qualifications Experience with shared governance among diverse faculty with varying titles, ranks, and program specialties. Successful record of maintaining a competitively funded research program. Evidence of both ideas and skills necessary to lead the department in continued growth and innovation. Ability or experience to effectively support and facilitate the continued expansion of faculty research and department centers.
